The House that Jack Built
Cut out in cardboard patterns to make the house. Ten pieces are needed
altogether. Two 23 cm by 10 cm for the roof; two 21 cm by 10 cm, for the front and back; two
11 cm by 10 cm with triangular tops 9 cm by 9 cm, for the sides and four one-inch strips from
which to cut the chimney. Cut out windows and doors where needed.
Biscuit pastry ingredients
-
227 g butter or margarine
-
2 egg yolks
-
6 tablespoons water
-
teaspoon vanilla te essence
-
500 grams plain flour
-
2 level teaspoons baking powder Good pinch salt
Beat the butter and sugar. Add the egg yolks and mix in thoroughly.
Flavor with the vanilla essence. Stir hi the cold water. Sift together the
flour, baking powder and salt. Add these to the mixture, making a dough which
should be firm and easy to handle. Turn on to a lightly- floured board and knead
sufficiently to make smooth on the outside. Roll out thinly and lay on baking
tray.

Place cardboard patterns on top and cut out. Bake light broom in a moderate
oven. Cover an oblong board with some green icing and sprinkle it with green
coconut to represent die grass. Now pipe the tiles on the roof, using blue royal
icing through a basket weave tube. Allow to dry before assembling the house.
Fit the pieces of biscuit pastry together, securing them in place with royal
icing. Add decorations, using royal icing for the pipe work and soft icing for
the path. As an alternative, make a 250 grams fruit cake in an oblong tin and
build the walls round it. This will be stronger than the hollow house and easier
to erect.
