Silhouette Icing

Silhouette Icing

This type of decoration will make a simple unusual topping for children's party cakes, and subjects may be chosen from characters in nursery rhyme books, flowers, animals or birds.

Trace the shape on to a piece of thin cardboard and cut out to make a stencil, making outlines simple and clear.

Silhouette Icing Patterns

Sift some icing sugar on the stencil or cut-out on top of the cake or sift over some cocoa through a fine sieve. For this, a coffee strainer may be used, it makes an ideal substitute.

Lift the stencils off very carefully. If this operation has been carried out properly, there will be a perfect pattern top.

  1. Silhouette Icing: Trace the desired shape on to thin cardboard and cut out to make a stencil.
  2. Cover the top of the un-iced cake with sifted icing sugar, and place the stencil over this.
  3. Sift cocoa through a fine sieve over the stencil. A coffee strainer may be used for the sifting.
  4. Be very careful in lifting off the stencil or the pattern will be spoilt by blurred outlines.
